Women's History Month - March 11th

President Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was not only the first woman president of Iceland in 1980, but she was the first democratically elected female head of state in the world. Her 16 years in the president’s office remains the longest term a female elected head of state has ever served. She was elected by a narrow margin of 33% in the election of 1980, but in later terms enjoyed popularity of a 95% reelection rate in 1988. And in 1980, she was awarded with International Leadership Living Legacy Award by the Women’s International Center.
